The Iranian Army has 350,000 soldiers, but can mobilize nearly 1,9 Million reservists within six to twelve months in the event of war.

The US Army consists of 1,170,000 soldiers and could deploy more than 4,5 Million reservists in the same period.

The Iranian Army (Artesh) and the powerful Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) together form one of the largest armed forces in the Middle East, with an estimated total of 580,000 to 610,000 active military personnel. The armed forces are divided into traditional units and an elite unit (IRGC) that reports directly to the supreme spiritual leader.

The total active manpower is ±610,000 military personnel, supplemented by ±350,000 reservists.

The protests in Iran are still ongoing. This weekend, people across the country took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with Ayatollah Khamenei’s regime. Experts say these are the largest protests since the Iranian Revolution in 1979, which brought the Islamic regime to power. However, they say that a change of power is still a long way off.

Iran’s population is facing economic hardship, partly due to Western sanctions against the current regime. Corruption is also rampant in the country. Many protesters are fed up with the radical Islamic government led by Ayatollah Khamenei.

That could change, however, if the Americans decide to get involved. Last night, US President Trump said he was prepared to intervene militarily in Iran. He said the country could be ‘hit very hard’. Strong words, says Aarts.* He seriously doubts Trump’s statement. “I don’t expect the Americans to bomb. And what would such military intervention look like anyway?”

And a deal isn’t even the protesters’ goal; they want a change of power. Something Correspondent Nagtzaam doesn’t see happening. “The chance of regime change is very small, even with American intervention. Partly due to the unwavering support of the powerful Revolutionary Guard.”

Iran’s Leaders responded to Trump’s statements: “We’re not looking for war, but we are prepared for it.”
